I read in one of my classes on human behavior psychology, that we humans do not aim for happiness. What we aim for is avoidance of pain. So our ultimate goal is not to feel happy but avoid suffering.

But this weekend I felt completely happy and it made me think, that what made me happy should be noted down for my future references. And I was not trying to avoid any suffering or pain or any negative emotion, I was just simply happy by participating in one activity.

I do not have the words to describe that happy feeling, that feeling of I am at the right place, doing exactly what I want to be doing and this is so awesome!

I was watching a dance competition and it was magical. I had to participate as well, but my partner got sick so I could not. I was just watching others dance and it was the most beautiful thing I have seen! The most beautiful. The energy, the bodies, the sounds, the dresses, the vibe. The mix of absolute perfection to my eyes. I felt so happy, so completely fulfilled. Everything seems possible on the dance floor.

So right there I got the idea to make a happiness list. Write down all the things that can bring joy to my life. Because I know that the dark days will come. They always do. But then I can pick up my happiness list and see what brings me joy. What can I do to brighten my life?

Until now I have written down a few things and hung an A3 sheet of paper with this list in my home office, so I can always add more.

Happiness List:

  • Dancing
  • Riding my yellow bicycle
  • Spending time in nature
  • Listening to loud music
  • Spending time alone with a great book
  • Calling a good friend
  • Yoga
  • Repeating my written affirmations for myself

Try to write down your happiness list. List all the activities, things, and people, that make you happy.
