I stopped my gym membership after 10 years and found a better alternative

I have been going to the gym for almost 10 years regularly. Yes, regularly. Sometimes 7 days a week, sometimes 6 days a week, sometimes 3 days a week, but never missed a week (unless I was sick or on vacation).

Me on the bike, 2022 July. Denmark.

Then Corona hit and so much changed. I found a new hobby — cycling. We were very lucky in Denmark because we always could go out. We were never homebound. We could always be in nature. So I combined nature and exercise. I injured my knee after running a marathon and half marathons right after, so I had to find an alternative.

I fell in love with cycling. I started cycling a lot, especially during good weather. For me it is freedom. It is the best medicine for lack of motivation, feeling sad or overwhelmed.

It just looks hard, but the feeling is awesome! Belgium, 2022. Huy Wall.

Then Corona ended (if we can say that) and I did not feel like going back to the gym. To make a good habit stick we need to cut the steps it takes to do it. I always felt that it is cold outside, rainy or windy, and I need to walk to the gym, then change and do exercises and walk back… So why not bring the gym to my home?

I bought weights, a yoga mat, few other things, and downloaded the best app ever for exercises — FitOn. I love it. (I am not involved in their business in any way, I genuinely adore it).

Now I can train year-round at home doing strength exercises, yoga, and pilates. And cycling is my cardio and absolute rescue even from myself sometimes.

Plus, I save 30 euros each month. That is a lot of euros in 10 years.

To make a good habit stick, make it easy to do. In this case, I brought the gym to my home and found what activity I would love to do even on a rainy day.
