Have you ever refused to do something or passed on the opportunity because of fear?
Last weekend I just realized how much my knowledge about our brain helps me in my life right now and I would like to share my lesson with you. The lesson is about fear.
My boyfriend and I have this tradition that each month one of us organizes a surprise date. And last time was my turn, so I organized wall climbing. And I did not even think that I could be afraid of heights. Well, I was! I am okay on a high mountain when there is ground below my feet, but hanging out there with just air below was not fun.
I really felt the fear and it took me a very long time to climb up and not look down. But the worst was the first trial. After I pushed myself till the end the first time, and the second time I wanted to go by myself. It felt so good to win over myself and my brain telling me the lies. There literally was no danger, but my brain kept telling me, “but what if you fall” and then I kept repeating “but what if I fly”? It is just fear talking. It is not real. I can do this. I know I can. One step at a time. And I could!
So the biggest lesson from that day was that:
💕our brain is created to protect us, so they do not want us to try new things. Ask yourself reasonable questions. Is it really dangerous or is it just my brain trying to keep me safe?
💕the first time is the hardest, the second time is much easier. So I just need the strength to try one time.
the feeling on the other side of fear is amazing. You feel that you are on top of the world.
💕you realize that the fear was so exaggerated.
What are you afraid of? How can you push through the fear? Maybe by questioning yourself is it really so dangerous or is it just survival brain playing games? Can you divide the challenge into smaller steps? Like maybe climb halfway up the wall in my case. Or try with a very good friend, or?
